A Reddit user recently found themselves in a bizarre conflict after their twin brother’s girlfriend allegedly accused them of intentionally showing her up during a birthday gift exchange. Taking to the AmItheAhole subreddit, LegoBirthdayGift explained that she and her twin brother are 25 years old and have shared a deep love for Lego since childhood. Growing up, their family couldn’t afford many sets, so they treasured the ones they had. In her post on Reddit, she noted that they frequently bought bags of loose bricks from charity shops. This shared hobby was a major bonding experience. According to her, the brother even credits those early days of building with inspiring him to become an architect. On their birthday a few days ago, the twins held a small family gathering. She noted that her boyfriend and her brother’s girlfriend of two years were both in attendance, and that they had given nice gifts. As is their tradition, the twins waited until the end of the gift exchange to trade presents with one another. The Redditor wrote, “I got him the Neuschwanstein Castle Lego set and he got me the Notre Dame Lego set. He clearly loved his gift and was going on about how excited he was to build it and how he’d be spending his next day off working on it. He showed a lot more enthusiasm for this than the watch his girlfriend got him though he had clearly liked that too.” The fallout came later “Since then his girlfriend has reached out to me insisting I tried to show her up deliberately by getting him a gift he’d like more and how she was trying to treat him like an adult with her gift while I was encouraging him to be childish. She also thinks we somehow planned this gift exchange as we both got Lego for each other,” the Redditor wrote. She then clarified to her brother’s girlfriend that the gift was simply a natural outcome of their lifelong shared interest. Since the girlfriend was still allegedly upset, the Redditor told her, “I had no intention of showing her up but that if she really wanted to win the day with gifts she should have considered his interests and not worried about what seems appropriate for an adult.” She claimed that the girlfriend then insisted that she should have been warned about the gift beforehand. Of course, then she asked the community if she was an A**hole. The community mostly said “no.” AITA for" showing up" my brothers girlfriend by getting him a birthday gift he liked more and not warning her I was getting a big gift? byu/LegoBirthdayGift inAmItheAsshole One user commented, “NTA. Her gift to you is a pair of huge red flags. Make time for a chat with your brother about what she said, for it is a very controlling way of behaving.” Many commenters highlighted what they saw as the girlfriend’s apparent insecurity. One user wrote, “Girlfriend is definitely jealous and insecure of OP’s bond with her brother. She’ll definitely try to come between them. And if she thinks the things that make him happy are childish and beneath him, then she doesn’t really care about him or his well being.” Another added, “NTA. You got your twin a gift tied to a lifetime of shared history. She got him a nice adult watch. Neither is wrong, they’re just different lanes. Her calling Lego ‘childish’ to a working architect who literally credits it for his career is the actual tell here. She’s mad at the wrong thing.” The original poster responded here, admitting, “Honestly I wanted to say much worse than I did and her picking a gift just because it seemed more adult just struck me as so weird!” This type of tension is not uncommon when a new partner enters the picture. According to Psychology Today, siblings and their partners often face perilous moments when a new person enters the family dynamic. Sometimes this jealousy can manifest in horrible ways. In one case, a woman found that her half-sister was pregnant with the TikToker’s first baby daddy. Karen Gail Lewis, a counseling psychologist, notes, “Our brothers and sisters were our first ‘marriage’ partners. We have a lot of emotional stock invested in them and in the spouses they choose.” This can extend to parents too, and in the case of a Mexican man, it led to the death of his California beauty queen wife at the hands of his mother. When a new partner feels threatened or jealous of the closeness between siblings, it can reportedly lead to friction. The Psychology Today article explains that partners may sometimes use their influence to drive a wedge between the sibling and their family. In some cases, this manifests as a demand for the partner to choose between the family and the relationship.
