Fitzdares trader Mark Cancea says the firm will be looking to take on King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes favourite Calandagan (Gleneagles) at odds of 13-8 on the basis that Francis Graffard's stable star has not been at his brilliant best so far this season.Cancea labelled the Ascot showpiece as being one of the best renewals in recent times and, given the strength in depth to the line-up, the trader said that Fitzdares would be happy to lay the top end of the market and hope for a result.He said, “Calandagan has been well-supported but I want to take him on. We've seen support for Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel) and there has been each-way support for Kalpana (Stud Of Man) after some positive vibes emanated from the Andrew Balding camp in the middle of the week. But certainly, I think Calandagan is layable. In actual fact, there are very few horses in the race that would be surprise winners. It is a very good renewal and there is real strength in depth. I'm not convinced about Calandagan, though.”Cancea added, “I don't think he is the same horse this year. Okay, we all know why he was beaten in the Coronation Cup – the ground was too soft. I'll put a line through that effort. But even last time at Saint-Cloud, he didn't over-impress me. I do think Masquerade Ball (Duramente) has a very good chance but my concern is that he comes into this race lacking match fitness and I feel that could be the slight question mark. The way I'd be approaching this race is from the mindset of a bookmaker. I would just lay the top three or four in the betting and hope for a result. But definitely, we'll be happy to take Calandagan on at those odds because there are so many good horses in opposition.”Admittedly, the ante-post markets for Goodwood and Galway have yet to explode into life. That being said, Fitzdares reports an even spread of money between the top three – Bow Echo (Night Of Thunder), Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) and Opera Ballo (Ghaiyyath) ahead of the Sussex Stakes.He said, “The Sussex Stakes is the biggest betting heat. Without question. However, given the prices, the money has been evenly spread between Bow Echo, Gstaad and Opera Bello. If you were to give me a free bet on the race, I'd probably go with the older horse, Opera Bello. He ran a cracking race in defeat in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot and I actually feel that, if William Buick had been aboard, he may well have won because Opera Bella is the type of horse who takes a bit of knowing. Okay, the money has been evenly spread, but Bow Echo is our biggest loser. But the ante-post betting on the Sussex doesn't really compare to Royal Ascot, for example.”He concluded, “Traditionally, the Golden Mile and the Stewards Cup are the big handicap races that punters love to get stuck into at Goodwood. However, you don't see much ante-post action on big handicaps like that anymore. One reason for that is that punters like to wait and see the draw so, while we haven't seen much support outside of the Sussex, we expect to be very busy throughout the week. The same applies to Galway. Especially early in the week, we will do a lot of business. Wednesday and Thursday in particular are very big days with the Galway Plate and the Galway Hurdle usually big betting races. The market has been quiet on those races so far but I expect that to change closer to the time.
