Before he could even grab his snack, he was allegedly trapped in the fallout of a grandma aggressively berating a 13-year-old for being a “bad mother.” If Nathaniel’s latest grocery store recount on TikTok is to be believed, the Target snack aisle is no less than a war zone. His simple hunt for protein bars ended with him witnessing a confrontation so mean he felt bad for the young child even after clocking out of the store. An 80-something grandma first mistook Nathaniel to be an irresponsible parent Nathaniel explained that he only ended up at Target because his local Dollar General was out of his go-to protein bars. But as he walked toward the back of the store, an elderly woman allegedly blocked his path. She pointed directly at him, and asked, “Is this your kid?” Confused by the sudden inquiry, Nathaniel looked around the empty aisle to ensure she was actually addressing him. “Me? I didn’t know if she was talking to me at first,” he recalled. He added that he couldn’t even see the child standing behind the woman, at this point. So, Nathaniel quickly clarified that he didn’t have any children, prompting the woman to redirect her anger. His older sister, a girl Nathaniel estimated to be around 12 or 13 years old, was shopping with him. She had allegedly walked a short distance down the aisle briefly to grab food items. But without bothering to verify the situation, the elderly woman allegedly launched into an aggressive verbal tirade against the young girl. She publicly shamed the teen, scolding her in front of strangers and repeatedly calling her a “bad mother” for leaving her 5- or 6-year-old brother for a split second. “Bro, I felt bad for this girl because it was like some 90-year-old grandma or like 70- or 80-year-old grandma tearing this girl out,” Nathaniel said in disbelief at the sheer intensity of the scene. Strangers shouldn’t feel entitled to publicly shame young caretakers Public parenting critiques are a common occurrence. But aggressively scolding young siblings taking care of each other crosses a major line. Older generations sometimes jump to dramatic conclusions without reading the room. This may turn a minor retail moment into an invasive public interrogation.
