A dramatic rescue unfolded off Gozo’s coast on Sunday evening after two teenagers got into difficulty trying to make their way back to shore at Xatt l-Aħmar, with rough sea conditions quickly turning a routine swim into a dangerous situation.Video from the scene shows Armed Forces of Malta rescuers carefully manoeuvring their vessel through extremely choppy water as waves crash around the rocky coastline to reach the stranded swimmers.The Rescue Coordination Centre received the alert and immediately dispatched an AFM vessel to Xatt l-Aħmar in Għajnsielem. However, the second was unable to do so safely and had to be recovered directly by the AFM crew.After being brought aboard the rescue vessel, the teenager was handed over to a Gozo General Hospital ambulance for further medical treatment. No update on the individual’s condition had been released at the time of writing.Xatt l-Aħmar is a popular swimming and snorkelling spot, particularly during the summer months, but Sunday’s conditions highlighted just how quickly the sea can become unforgiving. While getting into the water may seem manageable, rough swells can make climbing back onto rocky shorelines incredibly difficult and dangerous.The AFM’s rapid response ensured both teenagers were safely accounted for before the situation escalated further.Video credits to Talk News•
