Germany sporting director Rudi Voller expects Joshua Kimmich to continue as captain of the national team after Jurgen Klopp's arrival as head coach.Klopp was appointed as Julian Nagelsmann's successor last week, with the latter leaving the role following Germany's last-32 exit at the World Cup.Germany lost on penalties to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes; it was the first time Germany lost a shoot-out in the competition.Kimmich, who has won 114 caps for Germany, was named captain of the national team after Euro 2024, when Ilkay Gundogan retired from international football.Klopp did not confirm whether Kimmich would continue as captain in his first press conference, but did mention all players now have a chance to represent Germany going forward. However, Voller expects Kimmich to continue in the role under Klopp."I assume so," Voller said on the matter at the International Coaches' Congress in Mainz."Jo Kimmich has proven in many international matches that he is a leader and a great captain."I cannot imagine there will be any major change in that position."We have all followed what he [Klopp] has said. You didn't really get the impression that anything else was planned."1 – Germany suffered their first ever FIFA World Cup elimination via a penalty shootout, having won their previous four, while it’s only their second loss on penalties at a major tournament following the 1976 UEFA EURO final to Czechoslovakia (3-5).Faltered. pic.twitter.com/L1conlu34R— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) June 29, 2026Klopp and Kimmich are set to link up for the first time with Germany in the extended September-October international break, with four Nations League games scheduled to take place. The first comes away against the Netherlands on September 24, while Klopp's first home game in charge is against Greece three days later.Germany will also host Serbia during the break before playing the return game in Greece on October 4.The post Germany sporting director Voller expects Kimmich to remain captain appeared first on SoccerNews.
