John Agius, the 74-year-old man at the heart of last Friday’s dramatic turn of events which saw a construction site being set on fire and a shoot-out with the police that injured two officers, will appear in court this morning. Agius, known to neighbours as “Johnny tal-għalqa” (“Johnny of the field”), is believed to have been the man who deliberately lit a large fire beneath workers on a crane at a neighbouring site after a dispute. When police rushed to the scene, a tense, hours-long police operation and negotiations came to a head with a dramatic shoot-out which injured two officers, Special Intervention Unit officer Johann Vella and Constable Omar Sharif. Vella spent most of Friday evening fighting for his life after sustaining serious injuries to his face and neck, but was thankfully reported to be in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit as of yesterday morning. Police also recovered four firearms from the scene, with one of them believed to have been used during the shooting. Now, at around 9am this morning, police will be taking John Agius to court in relation to both the arson and the shooting. He will appear in front of Magistrate Dr Giannella Caruana Busuttil.
