After seven sweltering days, Malta’s official heatwave is expected to come to an end today, but the scorching weather isn’t going anywhere just yet.The heatwave, which began on 16th July, rewrote the record books after temperatures remained above the official heatwave threshold for an entire week.The standout day came on 19th July, when the Met Office recorded a blistering 43.3°C, setting a new July temperature record.The previous record of 42.7°C, set in both 1988 and 2023, has now been surpassed, with this month’s peak sitting just 0.5°C shy of Malta’s all-time highest temperature of 43.8°C, recorded in August 1999.The Met Office also confirmed another first: temperatures climbed above 42°C for three consecutive days, something never before recorded in its history.While the official heatwave is ending, the hot conditions are set to continue. A Yellow High Temperature Warning remains in force for Thursday and Friday, with daytime temperatures expected to reach between 33°C and 35°C.However, it may feel even hotter. Winds are set to shift overnight, bringing more humid air across the islands, meaning Thursday’s forecast high of around 33°C could feel closer to 36°C.A spell of stronger northwesterly winds on Friday is expected to offer some temporary relief before southerly winds return over the weekend, bringing humidity levels back up once again.So while the worst of the record-breaking heat may be behind us, Malta isn’t cooling down just yet.Share with your household!•
