An internal inquiry into the unauthorised use of a laptop at Corradino Correctional Facility has found no evidence of criminal activity, despite uncovering security failures that allowed an inmate to access the internet.The inquiry, led by Emeritus Judge Antonio Mizzi at the request of Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield, concluded that allegations of criminal conduct were not backed by evidence. However, it identified shortcomings in prison procedures governing the use of electronic devices.The investigation found that the inmate had been authorised to use a laptop in his cell in May 2024. Prison rules required the laptop’s USB ports to be sealed and its Wi-Fi disabled, but investigators determined that those safeguards had been tampered with after the seals were removed, allowing internet access.A preliminary examination of the laptop also found that it contained a large number of pornographic films downloaded from the internet.The government said the full report will not be published because it contains information relating to the prison’s security operations.Among its recommendations, the inquiry calls for clearer policies regulating inmates’ use of laptops, compulsory risk assessments before any device is approved, regular inspections of electronic equipment and a formal protocol for handling similar cases.Minister Bedingfield has forwarded the report to the Police Commissioner as part of the ongoing police investigation.Reacting to the findings, the minister said the allegations of criminal activity had proven to be “completely unfounded”, while adding that the inquiry’s recommendations would now be reviewed to further strengthen procedures and security at Corradino Correctional Facility.What do you make of this?•
