Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip 8, succeeding last year's Galaxy Z Flip 7. If you've seen the Flip 7 before, the new model will look immediately familiar.Rather than reinventing what was already a successful formula, Samsung has focused on refining the experience with a faster chipset, a lighter design, and a collection of new One UI 9 features that make better use of the flip form factor.After spending some time with the device, here are our hands-on impressions.DesignAt first glance, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 looks almost identical to its predecessor. It now weighs 180 grams and measures just 6.1mm thick when unfolded, making Samsung's compact foldable feel even more comfortable to hold.The lighter weight complements the flip form factor well. The former is despite Samsung introducing silicon carbon battery technology; the company appears to have focused on using it to make the phone thinner instead of increasing battery capacity.Although there aren't any major hardware upgrades beyond the new chipset, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 should still benefit from improved performance and efficiency compared to its predecessor.Cameras Galaxy Z Flip 8 cover screen camera – Source: Abhijeet Mishra / SamMobile Samsung hasn't made any meaningful hardware changes to the camera system.The Galaxy Z Flip 8 continues to use a 50MP main camera alongside a 12MP ultra-wide camera, with no upgrades to either sensor compared to last year's model.Instead, Samsung's focus this year is on software. The new Horizontal Lock stabilization mode first introduced with the Galaxy S26 series also arrives on the Flip 8, working particularly well with Flex Action Cam to create steadier handheld videos.SoftwareThe biggest improvements on the Galaxy Z Flip 8 come from One UI 9. Users now have access to more widgets, while a new app drawer allows compatible apps to launch directly from the cover screen instead of relying entirely on widget cards.The Quick Panel has also been redesigned to better match the experience on the main display. Notifications and quick settings are now separated in a more familiar way, helping the cover display feel like a natural extension of the phone rather than a secondary interface. It allows users to select a person from an existing video, after which Galaxy AI automatically tracks that subject and creates a new cropped video that keeps them in frame throughout the clip. The original recording is preserved, while the AI-generated version is saved as a separate copy.These additions make the cover display considerably more capable than before while also expanding the Flip 8's usefulness for content creation.First impressionsThe Galaxy Z Flip 8 isn't the major hardware upgrade that last year's Flip 7 was. Instead, Samsung has refined an already successful design with a newer processor, a lighter chassis, and software improvements that make the cover display more useful in everyday use. However, anyone coming from an older Galaxy Z Flip model will notice significant improvements, particularly thanks to the larger cover display and One UI 9's expanded functionality.Our first impressions are positive, even if we're not vowed by what's on offer. Samsung has wisely chosen to build on a design that already worked well, while making meaningful software improvements that enhance the flip phone experience without changing what made it popular in the first place.
