Alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Watch 9. Rather than making sweeping changes, the company has refined its mainstream smartwatch with a lighter design, a faster processor, and several new software features. While the Ultra 2 receives the biggest hardware upgrades, the Galaxy Watch 9 still appears to be a solid evolution of last year's model. After spending some time with the watch, here are our first impressions.Design and displayThe Galaxy Watch 9 continues Samsung's familiar circular smartwatch design and will once again be available in 40mm and 44mm sizes.Samsung has made the aluminium case lighter while also redesigning the strap to improve comfort during everyday wear. Although the changes are subtle, the watch feels a little more refined on the wrist than its predecessor. The display hasn't received any upgrade in panel quality. It still has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits like the Galaxy Watch 8, making it less bright than this year's Galaxy Watch Ultra.Performance and batteryLike the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, the Galaxy Watch 9 is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Wear Elite processor.Samsung says the new chipset should improve responsiveness throughout the interface, and during our hands-on the watch felt smooth while navigating menus and launching apps. The 40mm model also benefits from a larger 390mAh battery, representing a 20% increase over the equivalent Galaxy Watch 8. We'll need more time to evaluate real-world battery life, but the larger battery is a welcome improvement.Health and Galaxy AISamsung has brought the same new health and Galaxy AI features to the Galaxy Watch 9 as the Watch Ultra 2.Fitness Index combines health and fitness metrics to generate scores across several categories while also offering recommendations based on your activity.Vitals monitors changes in measurements such as heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature, heart-rate variability, and breathing rate after first learning your normal baseline over several nights. The Galaxy Watch 9 also supports Raise to Talk for Gemini, allowing users to activate Google's AI assistant simply by raising their wrist and speaking.First impressionsThe Galaxy Watch 9 doesn't reinvent Samsung's smartwatch formula, nor does it need to.Instead, Samsung has focused on refining the experience with a lighter design, a newer processor, a larger battery for the 40mm model, and useful software additions.Owners of a recent Galaxy Watch may find the changes relatively modest, but anyone upgrading from an older model should appreciate the cumulative improvements.
