Households and businesses that experienced power cuts lasting more than six hours during the ongoing heatwave will once again be eligible for government compensation.The government confirmed that the compensation scheme, previously introduced during exceptional circumstances, will be applied again following the prolonged power outages caused by the unprecedented heatwave.Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said the priority remains restoring electricity as quickly as possible, while also supporting those affected by the disruptions.“Our priority has been, and remains, to restore the electricity supply in the shortest possible time. At the same time, we want to ease the difficulties people are facing during this period,” she said.The announcement comes after Malta recorded a new peak electricity demand of 741MW on Tuesday, significantly surpassing the previous record of 663MW set during the 2023 heatwave. According to the government, the sustained demand placed exceptional pressure on the electricity distribution network.The government also thanked Enemalta employees for continuing to work in extreme temperatures to restore electricity across the islands, while expressing gratitude to the public for their patience and cooperation.•
