My mom was selling food stamps 75 cents to the dollar back when they were literally a book of colorful paper "bills". As kids she'd also take us around town to every little convenience store and gas station. We'd go in and each buy the minimum amount of candy required to break a $1 food stamp. Some places it was 10 cents, some as high as 25 cents. We loved candy day. She used the money to buy cigarettes and/or pills.
