After a few days of uncertainty and fan uproar, Walt Disney World Resort has made its final decision about a controversial prop inside the Haunted Mansion attraction. The Magic Kingdom Park ride drew widespread media coverage over the weekend when guests reported that the hanging corpse had been removed from at least one of the stretching rooms inside the iconic Liberty Square experience.Hanging Corpse Removed From the Haunted MansionCredit: Anna Fox, FlickrReports first emerged that the hanging corpse had disappeared from at least one pre-show stretching room in Walt Disney World Resort‘s Haunted Mansion attraction on Friday, July 24. For days, Disney Parks fans wondered if the Central Florida vacation destination had finally completed a long-rumored cultural sensitivity change to the ride, removing what for some guests is a triggering reference to suicide. While guests are in the stretching room, the Ghost Host informs them that the chamber they’re in has no windows and no doors, leaving them to find a way out. “Of course, there’s always my way,” he says; the room goes dark, a pre-recorded scream plays, and a doll hanging on a noose drops from the ceiling overhead. The lights come back on, the pre-show ends, and a door “magically” appears, sending guests to board their Doom Buggys for the actual Haunted Mansion ride experience.Credit: DisneyAmid an ongoing exterior refurbishment of the Haunted Mansion and following years of cultural sensitivity changes at Disney parks around the world, many fans assumed that Walt Disney World Resort planned to finally retire this controversial part of the Haunted Mansion pre-show when one of the hanging corpses disappeared on Friday. However, the effect persisted in at least one pre-show room, making it unclear whether the removal of one figure was a temporary refurbishment or the first in a trend.Walt Disney World Has Made Its DecisionOn July 27, WDWNT visited the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park and reported that the hanging corpse that had disappeared from one stretching room was once again visible. According to a statement provided to the outlet by Disney, the doll remained in place the entire time, but dirt and grime on the scrim that conceals the figure during most of the stretching room scene made it impossible to see.Credit: DisneyThe scrim has apparently been cleaned, and the hanging corpse is visible to Haunted Mansion guests once again.
