I keep a pretty extensive mechanic tool setup in my garage for working on my truck and doing side projects. My neighbor from two doors down saw me working with the garage door open last weekend and walked over to ask if he could borrow my heavy duty socket set and torque wrench to do a full suspension job on his rusty mid 2000s SUV. He said he needed the tools for at least three weeks because he only works on it for an hour after his office job. I was already hesitant because good hand tools are expensive and people love losing 10mm sockets, but I told him I guess he could use them as long as he picked them up from my garage and brought every single piece back completely clean. He immediately wrinkled his nose and asked if I could carry the heavy metal blow molded case down to his driveway instead because his back was sore from yard work. I just looked at him and said no man, if you want to borrow several hundred dollars worth of my equipment for free, the absolute bare minimum you can do is walk sixty feet to get it. He got instantly defensive and told me I was being completely unreasonable and poor neighborly spirit over a basic favor. Then he had the audacity to ask if I had a spare creeper mat and impact driver he could take while I was at it, but insisted I needed to drop them off at his porch by six o clock because he had plans later. I told him the offer was officially off the table and closed my garage door right in front of him. Ten minutes later I saw him posting on our neighborhood group chat about how some people on the block lack basic empathy and refuse to help out fellow homeowners.
