PS5 emulators are making years’ worth of progress each day, as these Minecraft and Demon’s Souls clips show

Wait 5 sec.

With Sony planning to kill off discs for good starting in January 2028, a sort of arms race began between PS5 emulators, which are now making tremendous progress with each passing day. We went from only being able to boot games into black screens to actually navigating menus and even rendering 3D environments, all in a week’s time. As we can see from Techjunkie Aman’s posts on X, SharpEMU, the most popular of the PS5 emulators, only needed a day to progress from booting Demon’s Souls Remake into a black screen (with a bunch of glitches to boot) to actually navigating the game’s menus where you choose body types, create your character, and so on. This is a game that is only available on the PS5, meaning getting it to run will give us a strong grasp of emulating native PlayStation 5 applications. The player in the video is navigating the End dimension and even beat the Ender Dragon, though the game’s textures are completely bricked at the moment since that side of emulation hasn’t been taken care of yet. Minecraft is now rendering on a PS5 emulator. It's still heavily glitched, but this is another meaningful step for PS5 emulation.Current progress:• Main menu boots• World loads• Some blocks, like beds, render correctly• Basic rendering pipeline appears functionalThe… pic.twitter.com/Dyj3cSidI4— Techjunkie Aman (@Techjunkie_Aman) July 26, 2026 But SharpEMU isn’t the only one making tremendous strides, since, as I wrote last week, there’s a genuine arms race between the emulators to see who’ll be able to run more games and with better performance. KytyPS5, another emulator, can now fully boot into several games, including Dead Cells and Blasphemous 2, while the likes of Subnautica are still only in the main menu stage. KytyPS5 previously succeeded in getting into GTA 5‘s PS5 port and was able to fiddle with the in-game settings. With this amount of progress happening so fast, we can probably expect to see playable PS5 games on PC within a year or so, helping players stave off Sony’s anti-disc measures by essentially transferring game files over to their own PCs and preserving them to be used on any machine that can run an emulator. No amount of digitalization will ever stop the players from finding ways to preserve media, and I commend all who work on emulators for their ungodly contribution to protecting the rights of consumers (and saving media from arbitrary server wipes). 0The post PS5 emulators are making years’ worth of progress each day, as these Minecraft and Demon’s Souls clips show appeared first on Destructoid.
