Gina Prince-Bythewood knows a thing or two about making warriors look formidable for the big screen. After turning Viola Davis and the Agojie into one of 2022’s most memorable screen armies with The Woman King, the filmmaker is moving into fantasy with her upcoming page to screen adaptation of the beloved YA novel Children of Blood and Bone. And with the first trailer finally dropping, it's pretty clear she has brought that same physical force to a world filled with stolen magic, royal cruelty and an insane cast that is worthy of a follow-up to The Woman King. Paramount’s official trailer introduces Thuso Mbedu as Zélie, a young woman fighting to restore the magic that was violently taken from her people. She is joined by Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg and Tosin Cole, but the supporting cast somehow gets even more crowded from there. Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Regina King, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch and Chiwetel Ejiofor all appear in the adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s novel.The Woman King comparison is almost unavoidable, and not simply because Davis and a ton of that film's stacked cast are back in the director’s orbit. Prince-Bythewood again centers a young Black woman learning how to survive inside a violent political system, but this time the battlefield is Orïsha, where magic has been stripped away by a brutal monarchy.(Image credit: Paramount Pictures)Mbedu, who delivered some of The Woman King’s strongest emotional work as Nawi, now takes the lead as Zélie. The story follows her quest to reclaim magic alongside her brother and the king’s own children, turning the conflict into both a rebellion and a deeply inconvenient family problem for the throne.Prince-Bythewood also co-wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi, giving the author a direct hand in reshaping her fantasy world for the screen. Paramount previously gave CinemaCon attendees an early look at the film, with the director appearing alongside Mbedu, Idris, Stenberg, Ejiofor and King to introduce footage from the adaptation.Davis’ reunion with Prince-Bythewood is exciting enough, while King, Elba and Ejiofor bring the kind of authority to the big screen that is going to give the fantasy adaptation the kind of gravitas the property deserves. Erivo and Lynch make the bench even deeper, with Zackary Momoh and Richard Mofe-Damijo among the additional veterans filling out Orïsha.The music has similar firepower. The trailer, which you can see below, features new original songs from Grammy winners Tems and Burna Boy. Tems is also serving as executive music producer for the soundtrack, while Burna Boy is the film’s executive music consultant. That should give the adaptation a musical identity developed alongside its West African-inspired fantasy setting.A cast this large can sometimes leave a movie fighting for oxygen, but the trailer keeps its focus on Zélie’s journey. Prince-Bythewood has already shown she can balance intimate character work with large-scale combat.
