I built a free macOS app to answer one question: is crypto mining on an Apple Silicon Mac worth it? (Mostly no, and the app tells you so)

Wait 5 sec.

I kept seeing "mine crypto on your MacBook!" claims with no real numbers behind them, so I built MacDualMiner, a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) SwiftUI app that mines on the CPU and GPU of Apple Silicon Macs and measures whether it actually pays after electricity. What it does: - Runs open-source miners on the CPU (XMRig) and GPU (Metal/OpenCL), together or one at a time - Benchmarks your Mac and reads its built-in power sensor, then ranks every coin by profit after electricity - Tells you plainly when a chip would lose money, but still lets you mine if you want - Live power-vs-earnings chart, chip and battery temperature, and your balance at the mining pool - Setup assistant, safety rules (pause on battery, under thermal pressure, or while you're using the Mac), menu bar status, built-in updates What I learned building it: - The honest answer is usually "no". On my M5 Max at $0.17/kWh, Monero on the CPU (8.4 kH/s at ~96 W) only pays below about $0.14/kWh, and every GPU coin loses $0.24–0.35 day. I decided the app should say that up front instead of hiding it. - Measuring power properly matters more than hashrate. Using the Mac's own sensor (power above idle) changed several "profitable" estimates into losses. - Wrapping other people's miners is full of surprises. One miner only runs from a fixed system folder, and another held back its output unless it thought it was printing to a terminal, so the stats arrived a minute late. - Payouts are a UX problem too. Many people use wallets like Trust Wallet that can't hold Monero, so the app can pay out in Dogecoin, Litecoin or Bitcoin instead, through a pool that converts. Free, no ads, no account, no telemetry. Apple Silicon (M1–M5) and macOS 15 or later. It's not notarized by Apple yet, so the first launch needs "Open Anyway" in Privacy & Security; the source is on GitHub if you'd like to check it first. I'd love to know your hashrates. submitted by /u/becomethesolution [link] [comments]
