It’s decision time in Indianapolis but for now it looks like QB1 is safe.Just a few days after the team fired 10-year general manager Chris Ballard, the Colts fell to a fifth defeat of the season, losing 16-10 to Minnesota.Shane Steichen’s Indianapolis Colts are 2-5 through the start of the NFL seasonGettyDaniel Jones has failed to find the end zone in three of his last four gamesGettyImmediately after the game, head coach Shane Steichen was forced to answer questions about his starting quarterback after another limp display for Daniel Jones and the offense. The Colts managed just 10 points, with just a solitary field goal coming in the final three quarters after a first quarter Jonathan Taylor touchdown had got them on the board.Jones completed just over half of his passes on Sunday to continue a stretch that has seen him throw just one touchdown pass across his last three games.Going further back, Jones has failed to throw a touchdown pass in three of his last four games, and has not thrown for more than one score since November 2025.In total Jones has just four touchdowns and seven interceptions for the season and he has completed 143 of his 240 passing attempts – at a career-low 59.6%.They are hardly numbers befitting a starting quarterback handed a two-year $88million deal in March 2026, a little over a year on from joining the team on a one-year $14million deal. While calls for Jones to be benched are growing louder by the game there is not a lot behind him.2023 fourth overall pick Anthony Richardson has had the fifth year option on his rookie contract declined and looks like he has lost the faith of his coaching staff.Riley Leonard is the third string quarterback, and when injuries bit last season a 44-year-old Philip Rivers made a barely believable comeback, five years on from retirement. For now, Jones keeps the start.Jones wasGetty“I have not thought about a quarterback change,” Steichen said after defeat to the Vikings.“I’ve got a ton of faith in Daniel. That game plan today was to go run the football and, obviously, at the end, he had the interception. And that happens in football.”Ballard paid the price after a Week 6 defeat to the previously winless Tennessee Titans, but with just two wins on the board the Colts are hurtling to a top five draft pick.Unfortunately, their draft pick will go to the New York Jets having been part of Ballard’s deal to bring Sauce Gardner to Indy.It means hope of drafting a top prospect is on hold until at least 2028 while the likes of Taylor, DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson could all be traded by November’s deadline. With Ballard gone, Jones under pressure and Steichen likely fighting for his future, owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon is under pressure to clean house. It was more misery in Minnesota for Jones and the Colts in Week 7Getty Images - GettySuper Bowl winning Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been linked with a role – advisory or otherwise – in whatever Irsay-Gordon decides to move forward with. But for now, the focus is still on the 2026 season.Fortunately the Colts play in an AFC South that carries just one team with a winning record, the Jacksonville Jaguars – and they happen to be next up on the schedule for Indy.Win that and Steichen would find himself just a couple of games behind the Jags – lose it and another lost season in Indianapolis will all but be confirmed.Sign up for talkSPORT Stateside, the YouTube channel dedicated to passionate US Sports fans. Will Gavin, Brian T.
