Sophie Cunningham reveals WNBA schedule is preventing her from pursuing dream job

The Indiana Fever may have finished playing basketball for another year, but Sophie Cunningham remains in the headlines. The 30-year-old WNBA player soared in popularity when she joined superstar Caitlin Clark on the Fever, and became known for being the three-time All-Star’s ‘enforcer’ on the court. Cunningham soared to fame as Caitlin Clark’s teammateGettyBut the Fever’s season ended somewhat prematurely after they fell to the Las Vegas Aces in the first round of the 2026 WNBA Playoffs. With her off-season in full swing, the ever-outspoken – and somewhat controversial at times – Cunningham has been very busy as she braces for another round of free agency with her one-year, $665k deal with the Fever now having run its course. On Sunday, she was present at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, where she was tasked with waving the chequered flag for the Formula 1 drivers at the United States Grand Prix.Cunningham has even found the time to comment on the Fever’s front office shake-up following the resignation of team president Kelly Krauskopf followed by the abrupt firing of general manager Amber Cox. “There was not a lot of warning and that’s OK,” Cunningham said in a clip shared on X. “I think that’s probably a good thing that you kind of keep it in-house a little bit.”“But you know what, Kelly and Amber, they’re phenomenal, phenomenal people. They cared a lot about us as players and as individuals outside the court.“Hopefully the Fever come in and bring people who can do a really good job for that program,” she added. “I was blessed to be under Kelly and Amber and I hope them the very best. So, we’ll see what happens.”But that’s not all, as Cunningham has also revealed her plans to go to Phoenix where she will be filming a commercial, as well as doing some work in New York in the near-future. One thing she hasn’t been able to do, but would if only her schedule allowed for it, though, would be to feature on Dancing With The Stars. Cunningham has goals of one day joining DWTSSpeaking on her “No Hesitation” podcast with trainer Drew Hanlen, Cunningham revealed that she had been approached to join the TV show in recent years, but has had to decline due to conflicts with her basketball schedule. I’m good with my TikTok dances, but this is like legit dancing. But I grew up dancing. I loved it.”Several NBA players have featured on the show over the years, including Rick Fox, Clyde Drexler, and Iman Shumpert – who actually went on to win the Mirrorball Trophy with his partner, Daniella Karagach.Dallas Wings veteran Arike Ogunbowale also made an appearance, albeit only in the four-week special Athletes Edition in 2018, which also saw NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar take to the ballroom. The only thing stopping Cunningham from joining the cast one year is that DWTS starts filming in the month of September. This coincides with the WNBA entering the home stretch of its season, with competition ramping up as teams are vying to climb the standings and make the playoffs in pursuit of a championship. Of course, this takes precedence, and in the 2026 season, Cunningham proved to be an important contributor to the Fever, averaging 7.9 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists off the bench across 43 regular-season games. For now, her priorities lie with finding a – potentially new – home in the WNBA as an unrestricted free agent. But that doesn’t mean achieving her dream of competing on DWTS in the future is entirely off the table, with an offer perhaps coming her way once the time comes for her to retire from basketball, whenever that may be.
