I built a 1.1 MB iPhone app that translates restaurant menus offline and shows prices in USD

Wait 5 sec.

Most menu translator apps translate the whole menu in one go. Menus in Mexico are often messy and crooked, so the result comes out garbled and you still can't read anything. On top of that, many of these apps don't convert prices to USD, and most of them only work online. So I made Menu Translator (translation to English only). You take a photo of a menu, frame a dish, and get the English name with the price converted to dollars, like "$7.85 (145 MXN)". You can add dishes to an order as you go, so you know the total before the bill comes. Some details: Works fully offline. OCR and translation run on-device using Apple's frameworks, so there's no bundled model and the app is only 1.1 MB. Exchange rates update when you're online and the last saved rates are used when you're not. No account, no ads, no analytics. It doesn't collect anything. Spanish, French and Italian menus for now. It's open source (MIT, SwiftUI): https://github.com/nikashitsa/menu-translator App Store (US only for now): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/menu-translator-to-english/id6820523971 Outside the US you can build it from source in Xcode. Looks forward for any feedback. submitted by /u/vernik911 [link] [comments]
