Stromboli volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy): intense strombolian-type explosions

Wait 5 sec.

Powerful explosion from the easternmost vent at Stromboli on 29 Oct 2026 evening (image: Tom Pfeiffer)Activity at the volcano remains comparably elevated. When observed last night, the most active vents were the two ones in the northern crater area. The western vent in that area (the one to the right when seen from the observation areas) showed continuous mild spattering, interrupted by frequent, but mostly small strombolian type explosions which often generated small incandescent rock falls on the Sciara del Fuoco. The easternmost vent was characterized by constant glow, occasional weak spattering, and strong bubble-bursting explosions at intervals of approx. 20 minutes. Incandescent lava bombs were ejected radially from the vent to heights estimated 2-300 m. Most explosions were accompanied by detonating sounds; shock waves from this activity are regularly perceived throughout the village of Stromboli as well, generating short rattling of doors and windows.Ash-rich but rather weak strombolian activity was also observed from the southern crater area. The northern crater area seen at dusk with glow from the eastern vent (l) and spattering and a small explosion at the western vent (r) on 29 Oct evenint (image: Tom Pfeiffer)
