Two Malta restaurants have publicly spoken out against the new Budget 2027 measures affecting third-country nationals, calling for the government to reconsider the additional financial burdens being placed on foreign workers.Yiamas Greek Tavern said it “firmly opposes” the announced measures, arguing that its position is based on principle rather than business interests.“Behind every work permit is a human being. Someone who equally works hard, pays taxes, contributes to our economy and deserves to be treated equally with dignity, fairness and respect,” the restaurant said.Yiamas acknowledged the rising costs and financial pressures faced by businesses but said it would continue supporting its current and future employees affected by the measures.“Our employees are not simply part of our business. They are the heart of it, regardless of their nationality,” it said, adding: “You are valued. You are respected. You will not stand alone.”POSH Turkish issued a similar statement, saying it was “deeply concerned” about the measures and arguing that workers should not face additional financial burdens simply because of their nationality or residency status. The restaurant highlighted that members of its team come from different countries and backgrounds, work and pay taxes in Malta, while some have left their families and home countries in search of a better future.“We call on the Government to reconsider these measures and their impact on both workers and businesses,” POSH Turkish said. “Any policy should strike a fair balance between the country’s needs and the wellbeing of the people who contribute to it.”What do you make of the concerns being raised by Malta’s businesses over the new TCN measures?•
