‘Improve the relationships’ – De Zerbi reveals how Marbella boosted Tottenham

Wait 5 sec.

Roberto De Zerbi has opened up on the effect Tottenham’s trip to Marbella has had on his players following the recent upturn in results. There is no denying how poor Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the 2026/27 season was, with the Lilywhites failing to win any of their first six league outings. That poor run, which also included just three goals in six games, left the Lilywhites teetering in the Premier League’s bottom three, and they even dropped to last place at one point. However, results over the last two weeks have taken a big turn, with Tottenham beating Coventry City 3-1 before securing a historic 2-0 victory over London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, their first win at the ground since 2018.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramRoberto De Zerbi explains impact of Tottenham’s Marbella training tripThis latest turn in form also looks to have coincided with the Lilywhites’ trip to Marbella, Spain, where they went for warm-weather training following their 1-1 draw with Manchester United.A lot has been made of that trip, with many of the Tottenham players returning looking fitter than before they left, and now De Zerbi has opened up on the effect the training in Spain had on his squad. While their time away from the UK was more of a mini-preseason, there was also an effort for the players to bond and get to know each other off the pitch, and De Zerbi believes that has helped boost the team’s spirit. He told the Spurs media team: “I think when you are a coach, you have to solve the problems and you have to take the decisions, you have to take the responsibilities. “In that moment, I thought the best way to solve our problems is to be together, to stay close, to spend time together, not on the pitch, because on the pitch it is important when there is already a big group, a big relationship, a big union between the players. The focus went to the group, to find the best way to stay together and to improve the relationships.”De Zerbi reveals big team meeting was behind Spurs upturn in resultsThis is not the first time the manager has pulled out this playbook. De Zerbi organised similar trips while at Marseille, taking his players away twice mid-season, which also brought about an upturn in results for the French side.It now looks to have worked a treat once more at Spurs, but the Italian is adamant that the warm-weather training was not all that was required to turn his team’s form around.De Zerbi believes that a big team meeting with his Tottenham players after the United draw, where they had honest conversations, was the main catalyst for the upturn in form.He said after the Chelsea win: “I think what I call the negative record was the last problem we fought before the game. Normally we wanted to make our fans happy, but it is not our responsibility, it is the results of the past. Now, winning the game, we are very happy for them, very proud for the club. But I think we are working to change the mentality of our club in the last seasons.“Seven points after Manchester, before Manchester we spoke a lot. A big, big meeting, removing the mask and speaking honestly, clearly in front of ourselves. And from that moment I think we changed something in ourselves.”READ MORE: ‘I’d love to’ – Pedro Porro opens up on Spain rumours but remains respectful to TottenhamThe post ‘Improve the relationships’ – De Zerbi reveals how Marbella boosted Tottenham appeared first on Spurs Web.
