Daniel Spiteri, a 21-year-old man from Żabbar who works as a clerk at the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, has been charged with four terrorism-related offences. Appearing before the Court of Magistrates last night, Spiteri was told he’s being charged with offences relating to terrorist recruitment, training, travel and dissemination of material intended to encourage terrorist activities. This reportedly included learning the use of explosives, guns, dangerous substances or other methods used for terrorism purposes. An investigation into the young man started with confidential information received back in May, when the police counterterrorism unit received information about a Maltese man who had allegedly travelled to Syria in connection with terrorist activities. Other individuals considered relevant to the investigation were also identified. A search warrant was obtained last week, on Friday 23rd October. Four days later, Spiteri was arrested just before 5am in Żabbar. Spiteri has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and no application for bail was made during the sitting. The prosecution is being conducted by Attorney General lawyers Dejan Darmanin and Mauro Abela, together with Police Inspectors Zachary Zammit and Mohammed Shurrab. Spiteri is represented by defence lawyers Ismael Psaila and Amadeus Cachia. What do you make of this latest development?•
