A Starbucks customer turned a drink-order dispute into a free-speech argument after a barista apparently did not say “Charlie Kirk” aloud. The woman, whose drink bore the name, claimed the incident showed that freedom of speech was being shut down in America. The confrontation appears in a TikTok video posted by an account called Dr. Clarke. The clip begins with the woman asking the barista, “You didn’t call the name out?” When someone nearby points out that she is recording, she replies, “I am.” “It is Charlie Kirk,” she tells those around her, referring to the conservative activist who was killed in a shooting in September 2025. She then explains why she believes the incident matters. “A man spoke up for what he believes in, and he got shot in the neck over it,” she says. She says the dispute was about free speech She repeatedly invokes the First Amendment as the argument continues. “It’s called freedom of speech,” she says, later adding, “This is what Charlie Kirk died for.” She also claims that freedom of speech is “getting shut down in America.” After Kirk’s death, Donald Trump similarly framed the killing as an attack on freedom, promising that Kirk’s message would grow louder. At one point, she questions whether staff will call the authorities over her request. “You’re going to call the authorities because I asked somebody to say a name,” she says. The footage does not show anyone contacting the authorities or make clear whether staff asked her to leave. The barista’s side of the exchange is not captured in the clip, and it is unclear why the name was not called out. The First Amendment generally protects people from government restrictions on speech; it does not ordinarily require private businesses or their employees to say particular words on request. Starbucks has faced other disputes over names on drinks, including one involving a customer who stutters and found an unexpected message on his cup. The circumstances were different, though: here, the customer’s objection was that the barista apparently did not say “Charlie Kirk” aloud. The woman also claims she had already left the Starbucks a glowing review before placing her order, describing it as a “really good review.” She says she will still publish it alongside the video, but neither the review nor the store’s location is shown in the clip. It remains unclear which location she reviewed or what the review said. Viewers had different reactions to the video, with several questioning why the customer expected the barista to announce the name. “The fact that she was already recording… she was looking for a fight,” one person wrote. Another joked, “How dare her bring you the drink instead of yelling the name.” Others shifted the conversation to the broader political debate around Kirk himself. Near the end of the clip, the woman compares her situation with other customers in the store. She says they can use laptops and broadcast, while she cannot ask for a name to be said aloud. She then says, “I’m going to have to go on live.”
