Quick background: in Canada, holdback (the money owners hold back from contractors until the work is done) isn't one rule. It's 10% in most provinces, but Manitoba is 7.5%, PEI has its own 15%/20% split, Quebec is contractual, and Alberta has a 90-day rule for concrete and oil & gas work. Get it wrong and you get delayed payments or a dispute. Every calculator I found just did the flat 10%, so I built one that actually follows the provincial rules: All provinces and territories Correct rate per province, including the Manitoba, PEI, and Quebec exceptions and Alberta's 90-day rule GST/HST treatment on holdback (ETA s.168(7)) A PDF certificate you can hand to the other party It's free, no signup: https://www.albertastudio.dev/tools/holdback-calculator I built it as part of a set of free tools for Canadian contractors, but holdback arguments are so common that this one felt worth sharing on its own. Feedback I'm looking for: if you work in Canadian construction, do the provincial rules match how you actually apply them in practice — especially the Alberta 90-day rule and the PEI split? And is the PDF certificate something you'd actually hand to a client, or is it clutter I should drop? submitted by /u/Big-Yak-8734 [link] [comments]
