Part 2: NQ 23K & USDJPY 164Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 Index FuturesCME_MINI:MNQ1!PDMXOctober 30, 2026 | NQ / MNQ / USDJPY IN PLAIN ENGLISH Back in September, I outlined a potential Nasdaq correction driven by Federal Reserve policy, the Bank of Japan, bond yields, and market positioning. Following the futures rollover, my first December NQ downside target was 28,235. On October 30, NQ traded as low as 28,232.75, reaching that target almost exactly. However, I don't believe the correction is over. My updated outlook is for further downside, potentially extending toward NQ 23,000, before the market establishes a sustainable bottom and begins its next major bull run. At the same time, I'm watching USDJPY for a potential breakout toward 164, representing further Japanese yen weakness. These are two separate market scenarios. They do not necessarily need to occur together. My broader view remains short-term bearish and long-term bullish. I wouldn't be surprised to see a significant relief rally followed by another leg lower before a sustainable recovery begins. The first target has printed. The next move still needs confirmation. 1. NQ / MNQ: THE NEXT LEG LOWER The first target has been reached, but reaching a downside objective does not automatically mean the market has bottomed. I believe the Nasdaq could be entering a more significant corrective phase, particularly if the market fails to reclaim broken support and continues establishing lower highs. The October 30 session reached 28,235 before recovering above that area. This makes the market's next reaction around this level important. A sustained breakdown and failed retest would strengthen my expectation for further selling. Key December NQ Levels 30,107 | Major Resistance Original September short-setup invalidation level. A sustained daily recovery above this area would require reassessing the broader bearish outlook. 29,222 | Immediate Reclaim Level Former support and downside confirmation level. Failure to reclaim this area keeps the immediate bearish scenario in focus. Sustained strength above it would weaken that outlook. 28,235 | First Target Reached The original shallow downside target from September. Watching whether buyers defend this area or whether price breaks below and fails to reclaim it. 27,495 | Major Structural Higher Low One of the most important levels in my original analysis. A sustained breakdown would indicate deterioration in the previous bullish market structure. 26,695 to 26,485 | Original Deep Target Zone This remains my next major downside objective if the structural higher low fails. A sustained loss of this area could open the door to a much larger correction. 23,000 | Extended Bearish Target My new downside scenario if the market continues breaking structural support, supported by deteriorating breadth, expanding volatility, and broader financial stress. What Would Confirm a Move Toward 23,000? I am watching five developments: NQ breaks below 28,235 and fails to reclaim it. Price loses the 27,495 structural higher low. The 26,695 to 26,485 support zone breaks and becomes resistance. Volatility expands alongside weakening market breadth and widening credit spreads. Relief rallies repeatedly establish lower highs, confirming bearish continuation. The deeper target becomes more credible if these conditions develop together. From the October 30 level near 28,543, a decline toward 23,000 would represent approximately another 19% downside. That would be considerably larger than the original September correction scenario. I am not expecting a straight-line decline toward 23,000. There could be significant rallies along the way. A sustained recovery above 29,222 would weaken the immediate bearish setup. A recovery above 30,107 would require a broader reassessment. For now, 23,000 remains my extended, potentially multi-month bearish scenario rather than a confirmed destination. Because this forecast may extend beyond December 2026, futures contract rollover adjustments will need to be considered. 2. USDJPY: POTENTIAL BREAKOUT TOWARD 164 My original September thesis focused on the possibility that BOJ tightening could strengthen the yen and trigger a carry-trade unwind. That scenario required USDJPY to break and hold below 152.89. However, the currency market did not follow that specific scenario. I am now watching the alternative possibility of further yen weakness and a bullish USDJPY breakout toward 164. Key USDJPY Levels 152.89 | Major Bearish Threshold A sustained breakdown below this level would weaken my bullish USDJPY scenario and bring renewed yen strength into focus. 155.23 | Important Support Reference An area to monitor for continued support. Sustained weakness below it would suggest deterioration in the immediate bullish structure. 160.39 | Major Breakout Resistance This is the primary breakout confirmation level. I want to see sustained daily acceptance above this area rather than a temporary price spike. 163.99 to 164.00 | Upside Target My projected target zone if the breakout confirms and the dollar continues strengthening against the yen. What Would Confirm USDJPY 164? USDJPY continues establishing higher lows. Price breaks above 160.39 with sustained daily acceptance. A successful retest establishes former resistance as support. US-Japan interest-rate differentials remain supportive of dollar strength. BOJ policy developments or potential intervention do not reverse the move. A temporary breakout followed by a sharp rejection would not be sufficient confirmation. The breakout must hold. At the same time, the closer USDJPY approaches the 160 to 164 area, the more closely I would monitor possible Japanese currency intervention. What Does This Mean for Nasdaq? This is an important distinction from Part 1. A rising USDJPY means the US dollar is strengthening against the Japanese yen. That is not the same as a yen carry-trade unwind, which would generally involve rapid yen appreciation and a falling USDJPY exchange rate. If NQ continues declining while USDJPY rises, I would focus more heavily on earnings expectations, valuations, financial conditions, and broader market positioning as potential drivers. If USDJPY instead falls sharply alongside NQ, I would reassess the possibility of yen funding pressures contributing to equity weakness. I am watching both markets independently rather than assuming that one must determine the direction of the other. 3. WHY I BELIEVE IT GETS UGLIER BEFORE IT GETS PRETTIER Several macroeconomic risks could contribute to a deeper market correction. Midterm Elections The November midterm elections introduce uncertainty surrounding future fiscal policy, regulation, government spending, and the broader political environment. Historically, midterm election years have sometimes experienced significant market drawdowns followed by strong recoveries. However, historical averages do not guarantee a repeat of that pattern. I believe election-related uncertainty could contribute to elevated volatility, but I am not assuming the election itself will mark the market bottom. A correction could extend beyond November if underlying financial conditions and earnings expectations continue deteriorating. War and Geopolitical Tensions Ongoing geopolitical conflicts introduce additional uncertainty around energy prices, global trade, inflation, and investor confidence. An escalation that disrupts energy supplies could create renewed inflation pressure and complicate the monetary policy outlook. However, geopolitical headlines alone do not confirm a market breakdown. I am watching whether developments translate into measurable changes in bond yields, inflation expectations, corporate earnings, and market liquidity. Interest Rates and the Federal Reserve My original September thesis emphasized the US 10-year Treasury yield potentially closing above 5.02%. However, the October 30 equity selloff occurred with Treasury yields below that original stress threshold. This matters because the decline is not following the exact bond-led sequence I originally outlined. I am now monitoring two potential scenarios. Inflation-driven repricing: Bond yields rise, financial conditions tighten, and higher discount rates place additional pressure on equity valuations. Growth and earnings repricing: Bond yields decline as investors seek safety, but equities continue falling because earnings expectations and confidence deteriorate. Both could contribute to Nasdaq weakness, although through different mechanisms. The market's reaction to yields will help determine which scenario is developing. Technology and AI Valuations This is becoming one of the most important factors for the Nasdaq. Technology companies have committed substantial capital to AI infrastructure, while investors continue pricing in significant future growth. The key question is whether the returns on these investments can justify the spending and valuations. If capital expenditure rises faster than expected cash flows or earnings disappoint, the market could begin repricing future growth expectations. That could create additional downside pressure on the Nasdaq, particularly because large technology companies carry substantial index weight. This does not mean the long-term AI investment cycle is over. It means the market may need to reassess the price it is willing to pay for that growth. 4. WHY I EXPECT RELIEF RALLIES BEFORE FURTHER DOWNSIDE Markets rarely move in a straight line. Even during significant corrections, aggressive short-covering rallies can occur. After a sharp selloff, oversold conditions, bargain hunting, and short covering can produce strong temporary recoveries. However, a relief rally does not necessarily mean the broader correction is finished. The distinction is whether price reclaims major resistance and begins rebuilding bullish structure or simply establishes another lower high. For NQ, the areas around 29,222 and 30,107 remain particularly important. A rejection at resistance followed by renewed selling would support the possibility of another leg lower. A sustained recovery, supported by improving breadth and credit conditions, would weaken my bearish scenario. A strong bounce is not automatically a confirmed bottom. 5. WHAT COULD SET UP THE NEXT BULL RUN? Despite my near-term bearish outlook, I remain constructive over the longer term. I believe a deeper correction could eventually provide an attractive opportunity to accumulate quality assets. However, a market becoming cheaper does not automatically mean it is ready to recover. A durable bottom requires more than reaching a particular price target. What I Want to See Before Becoming More Bullish Stabilization or improvement in high-yield credit spreads. Improving market breadth and stronger participation beyond a few large technology companies. Declining volatility alongside stabilization in price structure. Improving earnings expectations. A sustained recovery above important technical resistance. A clearer inflation and monetary policy outlook. The first stage of a bull market can begin before economic conditions visibly improve. That is why I am focused on confirmation from price action and financial conditions rather than trying to predict the exact bottom. My longer-term expectation remains that a meaningful recovery could emerge after the market completes its repricing. 6. MY UPDATED OUTLOOK NQ / MNQ Near-term bias: Bearish. First downside target: 28,235. Reached. Next structural level: 27,495. Original deep target: 26,695 to 26,485. Extended bearish target: 23,000. Immediate bearish scenario weakens above: 29,222. Broader reassessment level: 30,107. USDJPY Bias: Bullish breakout scenario. Major resistance: 160.39. Breakout confirmation: Sustained daily acceptance and successful retest above 160.39. Upside target: 163.99 to 164.00. Bearish reversal threshold: 152.89. Broader Market Short term: Bearish, with possible relief rallies. Medium term: Watching for a deeper correction and signs of stabilization. Long term: Bullish on a sustained recovery after a durable bottom develops. 7. FINAL THOUGHTS Part 1 focused on the conditions that could trigger a correction. Part 2 focuses on whether that correction develops into something larger, and what could eventually follow. The first Nasdaq downside target has been reached, but the original September macro confirmation chain did not fully materialize. My September trade also had a September 23 time exit, so this analysis represents a new forward-looking scenario rather than an extension of that position. I remain bearish in the near term, with NQ 23,000 representing my extended downside objective if structural support continues to fail. At the same time, I am watching USDJPY for a potential breakout toward 164. Both scenarios require confirmation. I believe the market could experience a difficult period before conditions eventually improve and the next sustained bull run emerges. The first target has printed. The next leg still needs confirmation. Short-term bearish. Long-term bullish. Sometimes the market has to get uglier before it gets prettier. Not financial advice. This analysis represents conditional market scenarios, not guaranteed outcomes or trading signals. Futures trading carries substantial risk.
