In a pre-race interview, trainer Miguel Clement told Michelle Yu that 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard DETERMINISTIC (h, 5, Liam's Map–Giulio's Jewel, by Speightstown) would be ridden a touch differently in his rematch with fellow 'Rising Star' Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), having been soundly defeated when last they met in the GI Woodbine Mile.Given a positive ride by jockey Kendrick Carmouche, the $625,000 Keeneland September yearling was a forward factor every step of the way, took command on the turn and held off Notable Speech for a maiden Breeders' Cup success for trainer and jockey, alike.Bet down from a morning line of 8-1 into 5-1–significant action for a race of this magnitude–the dark bay colt did go forward from gate one and was content to do the early chasing, as California-based longshot Cabo Spirit (Pioneerof the Nile) made the running.Asked to take it up inside on the final bend, Deterministic hit the front in upper stretch and kept on gamely to hold off the fast-finishing Notable Speech.Looking to become the first repeat winner of the Mile since Wise Dan, the Godolphin homebred sat a midfield trip for William Buick, but was left too much to do in the final two furlongs. Lake Forest (Ire) (No Nay Never), runner-up in the GI Coolmore Turf Mile over course and distance Oct. 3, was likewise well back turning in, but weaved his way between rivals to secure third. The final time was 1:34.52.Deterministic is the first Breeders' Cup winner for Liam's Map, who won the Dirt Mile at Keeneland in 2015.Sales history: $625,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP.
