I built a tiny widget to check if anyone wants a feature before I build it

Wait 5 sec.

I kept doing the same thing with my side projects: spend two weeks building a feature, ship it, and watch nobody use it. So I built Knockbox. You add one script tag to your site and put dataknockbox="some-feature" on a button for a feature that doesn't exist yet. When someone clicks it, they get an honest popup ("this isn't available yet, leave your email and we'll tell you when it ships"), and you get a dashboard with views, clicks, click rate and emails per feature. A few details: - No cookies, one ~9 KB file, works on plain HTML, React, Next.js, or whatever Lovable / Bolt / Claude Code generated for you (there's a prompt you can paste so your AI installs it). - The popup is honest on purpose. It says the feature doesn't exist yet. -The landing page runs on Knockbox itself: the roadmap cards and even the "Pro" pricing button are real fake doors. So I'm validating it with its own method. It's free while in beta. I'd really like feedback on two things: - Would you use this on your own project? What would stop you? -Is "fake door" testing something you'd feel OK doing to your users? https://knockbox-flame.vercel.app submitted by /u/_b1cho_ [link] [comments]
