Sovereignty Gives Godolphin A First Breeders’ Cup Classic

Wait 5 sec.

Keeneland has played host to some truly amazing performances in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. In 2015, American Pharoah added to his Triple Crown, Authentic was an outstanding front-running winner in COVID year 2020 and we all know what Flightline did here four years ago. With the exception of the unfortunate early-week scratching of G1 Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude (Not This Time), the 2026 renewal was one where many arguments and questions were set to be answered on the racetrack, not in the court of public opinion.Despite an interrupted preparation, this year's running was all about reigning Horse of the Year SOVEREIGNTY (c, 4, Into Mischief–Crowned, by Bernardini), who traveled like a winner every step of the way and when his rider Junior Alvarado went for him in earnest, he put the race to bed in scintillating style.Off as the 9-5 second choice to defending champion Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}), Sovereignty was guided back in the field as 'TDN Rising Star' Knightsbridge (Nyquist) and set perhaps an easier pace than some had expected.Forever Young was intent on not allowing the GI Pacific Classic romper to get too far ahead and GI Preakness Stakes hero Napoleon Solo (Liam's Map) was three wide and prominent. Knightsbridge very much had things his own way up front, and Ryusei Sakai got after his mount approaching the quarter pole, but Sovereignty glided up going clearly the best of them.Roused to the lead in upper stretch, he widened into the final furlong and proved a comfortable winner as The Puma (Essential Quality) ran a valiant race to be second. Knightsbridge held for third, while Forever Young faltered in the final furlong to finish fifth, a spot behind his compatriot T O Password (Jpn) (Copano Rickey {Jpn}).The final time was a very crisp 2:00.36.It was an 11th Breeders' Cup winner for Into Mischief, a 17th for trainer Bill Mott–including three Classics–and the fifth for Alvarado, all for the Hall of Fame trainer.Lifetime Record: 13-8-3-1. O/B-Godolphin (KY); T-Bill Mott. A Champion crowned on racing's biggest stage. SOVEREIGNTY takes the @Longines #BreedersCup Classic! #BC26Congrats to the connections! https://t.co/B6j3HAlre2— Breeders' Cup (@BreedersCup) October 31, 2026The post Sovereignty Gives Godolphin A First Breeders’ Cup Classic appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
