Trainer Bob Baffert, who won the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile for the eighth time and his 22nd Breeders' Cup race overall when 'TDN Rising Star' Hughes (Into Mischief) proved too strong in the final eighth of a mile, gave his barn an A-minus grade following the Friday performances of his 2-year-old team. The Hall of Famer, who also sent out Salahudin (Uncle Mo) to be third to his stablemate, was at least somewhat lamenting the fact that he was not able to win both the Juvenile and GI Juvenile Fillies. 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Miss Monica (Early Voting) was arguably the day's biggest tough-luck story, rallying strongly for second to Emphatic (Nyquist).“I wanted to run 1-2 so badly in there,” Baffert said Saturday morning about the Juvenile. “(Salahudin) had a tough trip. You learn about these horses when you run 'em.“I wanted an A-plus; I really thought we could win both races,” Baffert said. “We got one. These races, they are just so hard to win. Everything has to go well. I am proud of the fact that they all showed up. That means they were well prepared, and I am proud of my team. They had them ready.”Team Baffert will head across Interstate 64 to Churchill Downs on Monday and will winter in California.“Going in, I knew Hughes was good, but I didn't know how good he was,” Baffert said. “He did everything so effortlessly yesterday. He showed what a really good horse shows: he goes fast and then he goes faster. I love those kinds of horses. Pharoah (2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah) had that trait. Justify had that trait.”Baffert indicated that he would consider taking the blinkers off Saluhudin going forward.“(Jockey Tyler Gaffalione) got him into the race and then he was blocked. He is really a big horse, the kind of horse that cannot stop and go. Hughes, he moves like a cheetah, he is quick on his feet.”As for the undefeated Emphatic, trainer Brendan Walsh, who was winning his first Breeders' Cup event in the Juvenile Fillies, said: “All is good with the filly this morning,” Walsh said. “She's in great shape and ate up this morning. All is well. It was a great day. Fantastic.”Juvenile runner-up 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard American History (Constitution) was pronounced in good order by trainer Todd Pletcher and heads to Palm Beach Downs in South Florida with an eye on the 2027 Triple Crown.“We'll try to freshen him a little bit while keeping in mind there's prep races that come up fairly soon,” Pletcher said. “I'll get with the WinStar team and come up with a with a game plan of sorts. Before the race we were kind of talking about the Florida route, hopefully to the Kentucky Derby. That's something we'll discuss.”The post Future Stars Friday Recap: Baffert Pleased With Juvenile Results appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
