TFB has covered a great many bipods over the years, and a fair number of tripods and shooting sticks alongside them. The Spartan Precision Pocket Pod is probably the smallest of the lot, and certainly one of the lightest, at 150 g (0.3 lb) and 9 cm (3.5 in) tall. It is also a different animal from most of them. The body is silicone rather than aluminium, with a high-grip surface that grabs whatever you put it on, and it has no legs to extend or lock. Before you ask, no, you are not shooting prone off this, and Spartan says so plainly, pointing prone shooters towards the Javelin range instead. What the Pocket Pod is for is the shot you take off a high-seat rail, a gate post, a fence, a tree stand or a vehicle bonnet, where there is already something solid to rest on and what you need is a stable, protective interface between rifle and surface. Most of us end up improvising support in the field, and most improvised rests involve putting a forend directly onto something hard, cold and slippery. A silicone pad with a bit of grip solves two problems at once: it stops the rifle sliding, and it stops you scratching either the rifle or the bonnet of someone's Land Rover, or Dodge RAM. In that sense, it occupies the same ground as a small shooting bag, with the significant difference that it attaches to the rifle rather than needing a free hand to place. Attachment is Spartan's MagnaSwitch system, the magnetic spigot that has become the company's signature. It clicks onto any of the Classic adapters already fitted to the rifle, and comes off just as fast. The adapter range covers Picatinny, M-LOK, KeyMod, Arca, UIT, the Blaser R8 and the standard sling swivel stud, so most rifles already have an option. Note that the Pocket Pod does not come with an adapter. The construction is a silicone body with an anodised 7075-T7351 aluminium spigot, and it traverses a full 360 degrees. It is finished in orange, which is a small and sensible decision: a 150 gram black object dropped in long grass is gone forever, and an orange one is not. I buy that completely.Spartan Precision Pocket Pod specifications:Weight: 150 g (0.3 lb)Operational height: 9 cm (3.5 in)Body: high-grip siliconeSpigot: anodised 7075-T7351 aluminiumTraverse: 360 degreesAttachment: MagnaSwitch magnetic system, compatible with Spartan Classic adaptersAdapter not includedColour: orangeNot designed for prone shooting£50 (U.K.) - There is a separate javelinbipod.com for other markets Do you carry a shooting bag, a bipod, or improvise with whatever is at hand?If this post has you ready to hit the range, head over to gunranges.com - a free directory to help you find shooting ranges near you, wherever you are in the United States.
