When doing reference images of cartoon and/or anime characters. Can editing their screenshot images be good? (Read text)

Wait 5 sec.

This is actually a strategy I’ve thought of myself for a while now if I was desperate if the actual images weren’t doing it but I’m a little uncertain if it will actually work or not so I want this community opinion on this. (I feel like it works with some characters and others not so much unfortunately) Mainly I grab a screenshot of a cartoon or anime character from their series for a reference image and edit it in Paint.Net and I would would often grab a leg, arm or an entire half side of the body of the character (except for their face usually but there are times I do that as well depending on the angle) from that image and mirror it to the other side cause the other side looks inconsistent. I also thought of combing shots of characters into one image (like a collage) for measuring/scaling. Here a list of reasons for why I might do this: The character doesn’t have a direct front facing shot. (Basically a semi 3/4 view where the face, neck arms and legs are a little off centered) Sometimes their side and/or front views are close ups and only shows their top body and doesn’t the rest of the body mainly their legs. The character does a weird pose during animation frames or shots that’s not exactly a T or A Pose and looks a little inconsistent. (Legs spread out or the arms posing differently) Extra: Some character shots may be direct front shots but they are shown from far away so the image size is small and the character looks a bit pixelated. Do modellers use these shots if necessary or do they avoid those? submitted by /u/No-Cold643 [link] [comments]
