SPY Breaks Support: Breadth Signals CautionState Street SPDR S&P 500 ETFBATS:SPYJulien_ExeSPY has broken below 759-763. But the key message in the lower panel is not simply that breadth has recovered. It is the historical return backdrop associated with its current level. THE CURRENT READING Breadth is in the 55-60% band. Under the current settings, this band shows an annualized forward-return estimate of approximately 5.0%, with up to 733 historical observations per horizon. The neighboring 60-65% band shows 9.4% under the same settings. This illustrates why a rising breadth curve does not automatically mean an attractive return backdrop. Its level matters as well as its direction. Crossing into another band is not, by itself, a trading signal. HOW THE INDICATOR WORKS Market breadth measures how widely a market trend is shared across individual stocks. In Market Breadth mode, the white line tracks the percentage of the selected market’s stocks trading above their 200-day moving average. A reading of 60% means roughly six stocks out of ten are above that long-term trend reference. The indicator groups historical readings into 5-percentage-point bands, then examines subsequent returns of the associated index. It combines adjusted, weighted results from six horizons, ranging from nine months to five years, into an annualized estimate. This expresses the combined result as an equivalent yearly rate. Brighter bands represent higher historical return estimates; darker bands represent lower ones. Performance labels show the estimate and observation count for each band. The > < markers identify the current band. WHY THIS IS USEFUL A breadth chart shows participation. This indicator adds historical return context. It helps answer: “What has historically followed this level of market participation?” Here, breadth has recovered from its October low, but the current band still shows a relatively modest return estimate compared with the neighboring 60-65% band. You can compare different breadth levels, select another market, or use the optional 200-day moving-average filter to compare historical observations from the same trend regime. MY SPY SCENARIO Below 759-763, my near-term bias remains bearish, with 748 as the next downside reference. A daily close above 763 invalidates that immediate bearish setup and brings the recent 771-772 area back into focus. These are price-based scenarios. The indicator supplies longer-term context; its statistics do not predict the next move to either level. METHODOLOGY NOTE The 5.0% reading is a rounded composite estimate, not a simple average or a forecast. The displayed count of 733 is the largest sample among the six horizons. These historical observations overlap and should not be treated as 733 independent trades. Results use the loaded historical sample and S&P 500 index prices, rather than SPY returns including reinvested dividends. They are not the results of a trading strategy tested progressively through time. Try Market Breadth / Macro State on your chart: locate the current band, compare its historical estimates with neighboring bands, and combine that context with your own price setup.
