More than 5,300 patients in Malta are expected to benefit from two mental health medications being made available free of charge through the government’s Pharmacy of Your Choice (POYC) scheme. The Health Ministry has announced that Escitalopram and Alprazolam will be added to the Government Formulary, with an annual investment of approximately €355,000.The initiative forms part of Malta’s National Mental Health Strategy and aims to improve access to treatment for patients experiencing depression and anxiety-related conditions.Escitalopram, used to treat depression and various anxiety disorders, will be available in three strengths: 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. Treatment can be initiated by consultants in psychiatry, neurology and geriatrics, as well as family doctors.Alprazolam will be available in 0.5mg tablets and is used to treat certain anxiety-related conditions.Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Ian Borg said the investment will help ensure that treatment costs do not become a financial burden on Maltese and Gozitan families. He emphasised that while mental healthcare involves different forms of therapy, medication remains an important part of treatment in certain circumstances.Chief Government Medical Officer Dr Clarence Pace said the additions build on previous efforts to expand mental health treatment options, including the introduction of Sertraline. The Health Ministry said making both medications available through POYC will improve access to treatment within the community and support continuity of care for eligible patients.•
