Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake at unknown depth28 Oct 08:27 UTC: First to report: BMKG after 3 minutes.28 Oct 08:31: Magnitude recalculated from 4.6 to 4.3. Epicenter location corrected by 5.6 km (3.5 mi) towards NE.Update Wed, 28 Oct 2026, 08:30Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 71 km west of Bandar Lampung, IndonesiaAn earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred early afternoon on Wednesday, October 28th, 2026, at 3:23 pm local time near Bandar Lampung, Kota Bandar Lampung, Lampung, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Bandar Lampung (pop. 1,166,100) located 71 km from the epicenter, Kotabumi (pop. 42,400) 75 km away, Metro (pop. 178,400) 85 km away, and Terbanggi Besar (pop. 52,600) 92 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. Out of these, 3 people indicated they felt it. The quake was reported to have been felt in up to approx. 20–30 km (12.4–18.6 mi) distance, with isolated cases to have felt the quake even 31 km (19 mi) away. Most reports came from Kotabumi (1 report), a town with 42,000 inhabitants in Lampung in 70 km (43 mi) distance north of the epicenter, Indonesia. Further below is a list of places where most people reported this quake. This section is being updated as new data comes in.User reports estimate the perceived ground shaking intensity according to the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale.Translate258.9 km ESE of epicenter [Map] / not felt (reported through our app)9 km ESE of epicenter [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) (reported through our app)63 km of Kotabumi, North Lampung Regency, Lampung (31.3 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) (reported through our app)15.2 km NW of epicenter [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) (reported through our app)List of cities/places with most reportsPlaceDistance from epicenterAverage reported Shaking IntensityNr. of reportsKotabumi, Lampung, Indonesia(Pop.: 42,366)70 km (43 mi)N of epicenterIV: Light shaking1Note: Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (4 in total) could be used for statistics. What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale? The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1259–259 km (161–161 mi)259 km (161 mi)III: Weak shaking115.2–15.2 km (9.4–9.4 mi)15.2 km (9 mi)IV: Light shaking29–31 km (5.6–19.3 mi)20 km (12 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (4 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 2 km2 (1 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 2 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Oct 28, 2026 03:23 pm (Jakarta)16 minutes ago - felt4.310 km0 km - This quakeKabupaten Tanggamus, 68 km W of Bandar Lampung, IndonesiaMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 130 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.1 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 9.7 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 1.41 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 9.8 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 44 quakes per year (or 3.7 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 122 quakes per year (or 10.1 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 131 quakes per year (or 10.9 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
