Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has promised to sell up if the club are outside the top ten of League One in February.Posh crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night with a 2-0 defeat to Bradford City. Savage has just one win from his opening five matches after replacing Luke Williams as managerGettyBut more pressing is their underwhelming start to the league campaign – with the club loitering dangerously inside the relegation zone in 21st place. One supporter took to social media defending new manager Robbie Savage for the Bradford defeat, calling out MacAnthony’s ‘young and hungry’ recruitment strategy. In response, the Irishman said: “Yep that idea (which we’ve had for 20 seasons) just won’t work at this level as it never has right?“But being serious for a moment; I take full responsibility for all the squads built over my 20 years owning Posh.“For some reason I have a lot of confidence in the current one. RS [Savage] will bring the best out of them and we as owners will support him in doing so.“My promise to you the fans is always honesty. So I make a promise that if this squad isn’t top ten by February, I’ll put my share of the club up for sale and let others take the baton with our wonderful club.”MacAnthony, a regular contributor on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan Show, became the youngest chairman in EFL history when he bought Peterborough aged 30 in 2006. He currently owns 76.68 per cent of the club, with the remaining equity held primarily by Gary Graham and Greg Barr (20 per cent) and IRC Investments Limited (5 per cent).Empty threat? talkSPORT’s chief football anchor Adrian Durham, who is a lifelong Peterborough fan, reacted to the chairman’s statement on Wednesday’s Breakfast Show.He previously predicted the club would be fighting relegation this season after a disappointing summer transfer window. Savage’s men are currently eight points adrift of the top ten in League OneGettyDurham said: “I think he said before he’s going to sell the club. I think he has to have a football club because it’s a drug to him. He absolutely loves it. So I think it’s a bit of an empty threat. “I also think it’s something the new manager doesn’t need – that pressure on him – because there’s no way the defensive element of our squad is going to be top ten. “A lot of fans have been saying this for quite a while now. The defensive unit is absolutely shocking – as we saw last night. “So unless they have a massive January window – and even then he’s got until February – I think it’s too much pressure on Savage that he doesn’t need. “So I think it’s a poor statement from the chairman. It’s a bit of an emotional one on social media.“But we were terrible last night, could not defend at all. “Robbie’s trying to go forward and score the goals because he realises that’s the best way we’re going to win games – by attacking – but defensively they are absolutely useless.”
