From The Hindu Archives, October 29, 1976: Too big a load for rail and road - The HinduPublished - October 29, 2026 04:30 am ISTTiruchi, October 28: The first steam generator for the 235 MW Madras Atomic Power project made by Bharat Heavy Electricals, is now on its way from Tiruchi to Kalpakkam.The hardware, weighing over 60 tonnes, could not be moved by rail because of its breadth. The national highway too is not equally ready for transporting the heavy equipment.The generator, mounted on two trailers, weighing another 40 tonnes, was rolled out of the BHEL nuclear shops on October 11. As the clearance from the Chief Engineer, National Highways, could not be got, it was “on display” on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway at the BHEL entrance till October 24.Thereafter, it slowly passed through the Coleroon bridge on the outskirts of Tiruchi on October 26, with the Chief Engineer, Highways, present. Incidentally the Coleroom bridge has withstood the load test well.The National Highway could not be used to transport this huge equipment because the Thozhudur bridge is not ready. Again, the highway beyond Villupuram for a distance of over 10 km. is still closed to traffic.With the diversion not fit to take the heavy weight, it is being moved via Perambalur.Published - October 29, 2026 04:30 am ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
