It’s funny how these corporations keep making the same mistake over and over again. This is the Age of Information! Any digital product ever produced by mankind can be found on the internet free of charge. Bruh, even physical products that can be digitized (like books) ARE ALSO available for free. So when you’re a digital company, your product isn’t so much.. well, the ‘product’ itself, but CONVINIENCE. Your actual customer base are the Average Joes of the world who want the thing but can’t be bothered to source it for free themselves, or lack the technical know-how to do so, or have a moral edict against doing so, or are just willing to pay for a product well-served. Good news for you (corps), is that those are most people. If your product is digital.. you can NOT afford to trigger your customer base even a SMIDGE. Remember when Spotify made the same mistake Sony is making? No one was asking Spotify to unlock all the features for all users, but when they made the free version actively shitty by locking playing searched songs under the subscription, along with setting a daily quota for SKIPS and song picks, and inserted an ad after every other song…etc, people left the app in DROVES. It was like they forgot that THEY THEMSELVES were part of the digital revolution that upended the old way of doing things. People are gonna get what they want one way or the other, and what you’re actually selling is CONVINIENCE. People were getting music for free in the early 2000s and music coprporations came to Spotify and Steve Jobs to save them, and they did so by making the legal paying option the best option of streaming or owning music. There was no killing free streaming, the cat was out of the bag. Sony is now paying for forgetting this fact. Fuck around and find out. All that being said, I don’t think Sony would back down. The completely passive (or worse, LoYaL.. yuck) portion of their consumers who don’t even know what the fuck is going on are more than enough to hold down the forte until some of the pretend-activists eventually come back. Only a minority will cut ties and game elsewhere (or elseway 😉) until Sony backpedals (which I don’t think they will do at all). But I think a new way of good console-gaming will be born from this.. whether it’s xbox taking the helm, or some new player in the business, or the illegal way becoming the best way. Time will tell. What do yall think? submitted by /u/SalamanderMisnomer [link] [comments]
