Tired of smartphone cameras turning photos into flat AI watercolor sludge, I built an analog film engine using Metal & OpenGL ES

Wait 5 sec.

Hi everyone, I’m an indie developer who has grown increasingly frustrated with where modern mobile photography is heading. Every time I snap a picture with a flagship phone today, the computational pipeline immediately kicks in: aggressive Deep Fusion sharpening, unnatural multi-frame HDR tone mapping, and AI skin smoothing that removes all organic texture. In high-contrast scenes, shadows get lifted until everything looks like a flat, digital watercolor painting. I wanted the opposite: contrast that breathes, organic shadows, true optical fall-off, and the authentic photochemical soul of classic analog film. So over the last few months, I built LAM—a camera app built completely around a zero-AI, hardware-level rendering engine. The Technical Approach (Why Zero-AI?) Most camera apps on the App Store simply apply a LUT filter over an already tone-mapped, over-processed JPEG. That doesn't fix the underlying problem because the camera sensor data has already been ruined by the ISP. To bypass this, I had to build directly on the raw GPU pipelines: - iOS: Built on AVFoundation + Metal, mapping camera pixel buffers directly to GPU shaders via CVMetalTextureCache with zero CPU memory duplication. - Android: Direct memory buffer access via Camera2 + OpenGL ES / Vulkan, completely bypassing the standard Android camera abstraction tax. - Physical Film Emulation: Custom shaders for halide grain scattering, halation bleed around high-specular lights, and non-linear density curves modeled after real 35mm stocks (Kodak Tri-X, Portra, Cinestill). Everything runs at a locked 60 FPS viewfinder with deterministic memory management, so the phone stays cool during long shooting sessions. The Tactile Experience Beyond the rendering engine, I obsessed over making the app feel like a precision mechanical instrument: - Haptic rotary dials for shutter speed and EV compensation with realistic click detents. - Physical film winder mechanics and roll rituals. - Fully localized in 16 languages. Links & Community Codes The app is live on both platforms: - iOS App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6773256954 - Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.brewkits.lam I'd love to hear your honest feedback on the tactile UI feel, the color science, and the rendering performance on your specific devices. (P.S. If anyone wants to test the full film stocks, drop a comment below or DM me—I have a few Lifetime Pro promo codes for fellow makers who want to take it for a spin!) submitted by /u/Routine_Tart8822 [link] [comments]
