Troy Deeney has responded to a viral clip from years ago in which he describes things he can do better than Harry Kane. The Watford legend found himself trending on social media as the historic video went viral following Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph on Monday.Harry Kane became the fifth Englishman to win the Ballon d’or earlier this weekAFPAt the time, Deeney was talking about a transfer to Tottenham which ultimately never happened in the summer of 2020, with the former striker briefly considered as a possible understudy to Kane. Speaking on the Winners Talking Podcast, the former Watford forward explained what he would have been able to offer Spurs if they signed him. What did Deeney say?He said: “Is Harry Kane a better footballer than Troy Deeney? Absolutely. I’d be naive to say he’s not. Is he a better finisher than me? Yes.“Can he head a ball better than me? No. Can he control a ball better than me, like look after it when there’s two men on his back? No. So when you’re winning a game in the 85th minute and you need someone to come on because he’s getting a bit tired or whatever, he can’t do what I can do. If I was going to go in at Spurs, that would have been my role. That’s it. That’s what I’m talking about.“Also, here’s something I will say and anyone that has played with me will say this. Can he be honest every single day and say that he outworked Troy? If he can say he can, he will be very good. If he can’t, I’m there. One thing that anyone knows is I outwork everybody.”Deeney addresses viral Kane clipAnd on the latest edition of the Premier League All Access podcast, Sam Matterface gave Deeney the chance to respond.Deeney said: “As you know, you say some things and they come back to bite you on the backside.“I actually think it is a more poignant point for the genius of Harry Kane and the reason we should all give him more credit.“The full clip is me talking about when I was going to Spurs and knowing that Harry Kane is much better than me, but I felt at the time, I had different attributes.“There will be people at Leicester who felt like that. There would have been people at Leyton Orient that felt like that and Millwall. In the end, Deeney didn’t leave Watford and retired as a legend at the clubGetty Images - Getty“Even Spurs players that they bought in – [Roberto] Soldado comes to mind.“He would have thought that he deserved to play more than Kane, but I think it speaks to his genius and his hard work.“Every now and again, you get things wrong. But ultimately, the plan at the time was that I wasn’t going there to be a cheerleader.“But I am a cheerleader now – fair play to him, he deserves it.”Deeney’s move to TottenhamDeeney came very close to joining Spurs in the summer of 2020 under Jose Mourinho before the lockdown season.Watford had been relegated from the Premier League the previous year, and at the age of 32, Tottenham and Arsenal proposed moves for the forward.Kane scored a whopping 73 goals for club and country to pip Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe to the biggest individual award in footballGettyDeeney exclusively told talkSPORT.com in 2024 just how close he came to joining Spurs. He said: “I had a chat with Mourinho but he wanted Carlos Vinicius.“So he was their main target, and if that doesn’t happen, then we’ll bring Troy in.“I had a chat with him, and it was like, what do you want to do? How do you want to do it? Would you be able to go from being a main man to one of the squad?“Obviously I was the main man at Watford, and I was captain and I said ‘look, if I get the opportunity to play, then I’ll play’.Mourinho and Deeney would have been box office togetherAFP“Do you remember the big Spanish striker that went there from Swansea [Fernando Llorente]? He kept scoring didn’t he, every time, in the League Cup and I thought if I can do that, my job’s good.“I said, all I’m going to do is push Harry [Kane] to be the best that he can, and be his biggest cheerleader because playing for Spurs was massively beyond my dreams.”In the end, Spurs went for Vinicius instead of Deeney.
