PS5 Firmware Protection Guide: 4 Essential Steps for Beginners If you want to stay on your current firmware for any reason, you cannot blindly rely on the console's default settings. Use these 4 essential steps to tightly secure your PS5 against unwanted updates. 1. Turn off automatic updates (System & Games) Ensure the console doesn't download anything in the background on its own. Block System Updates: Go to Settings (the gear icon in the top right corner of the home screen). Navigate to System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Turn off the following options: Download Update Files Automatically Install Update Files Automatically Block Game and App Updates: Go back to the main Settings menu. Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Go to Automatic Updates. Turn off both Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode. 2. Turn off internet connection in Rest Mode Prevent the console from secretly making background connections to Sony's servers when you're away. Go to Settings. Navigate to System > Power Saving. Open Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn off Stay Connected to the Internet. 3. Set a Custom DNS (Nomadic DNS) By tweaking your network settings, you can effectively block communication with Sony's update servers, even if you still want to be online for certain local or network functions. Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Highlight your active connection (Wi-Fi or LAN) and press the Options button (the three lines) on your controller. Select Advanced Settings. Change DNS Settings from Automatic to Manual. Enter the Nomadic DNS details: Primary DNS: 62.210.38.117 Secondary DNS: 62.210.38.117 (or leave as 0.0.0.0 depending on setup preferences). Save your settings. 4. Beware of Game Patches, DLCs, and Discs Never blindly trust game updates or external media. Do not install game patches or DLCs: These files can sometimes contain hidden system software updates bundled inside to ensure the game works on newer firmware. Watch out for physical discs: Do not insert game discs released after your current firmware version's release date, as the required system update can be physically packed onto the disc. submitted by /u/DutchGuyMikey [link] [comments]
