Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake at 140 km depth27 Oct 12:06 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 5 minutes.27 Oct 12:22: Now using data updates from EMSC27 Oct 12:22: Now using data updates from USGSUpdate Tue, 27 Oct 2026, 12:33Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 20 km northeast of Arriaga, MexicoAn earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred early morning on Tuesday, October 27th, 2026, at 6:01 am local time near Arriaga, Arriaga Municipality, Estado de Chiapas, Mexico, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 140.34 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tierra y Libertad (pop. 2,600) located 5 km from the epicenter, Arriaga (pop. 24,400) 20 km away, Cintalapa de Figueroa (pop. 42,500) 34 km away, Tonala (pop. 35,300) 35 km away, Villaflores (pop. 37,200) 61 km away, Ocozocoautla de Espinosa (pop. 39,200) 62 km away, Berriozabal (pop. 28,100) 73 km away, Tuxtla (pop. 604,100) 85 km away, and Chiapa de Corzo (pop. 45,100) 93 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)II: Very weak shaking2195–311 km (121–193 mi)253 km (157 mi)III: Weak shaking579–131 km (49–81 mi)93 km (58 mi)IV: Light shaking385–195 km (53–121 mi)136 km (84 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (10 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 4 km2 (2 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 3 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Oct 27, 2026 06:01 am (Merida)38 minutes ago - felt4.6140 km0 km - This quake20 km NE of Arriaga, Estado de Chiapas, MexicoMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 834 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.1 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 9.7 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 1.29 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 145 quakes per year (or 12.1 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 830 quakes per year (or 69 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 832 quakes per year (or 69 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
