‘Star Wars’ Fans May Be Cut Off From New Release as International Availability Remains Uncertain

Wait 5 sec.

The Star Wars franchise has spent nearly five decades cementing itself as a global phenomenon. From the moment George Lucas introduced audiences to a galaxy far, far away with the original film in 1977, the epic space opera has transcended borders, languages, and generations.Under the stewardship of The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm, the property has expanded across all media, while Disney+ has allowed fans from all over the world to access new content. However, an upcoming Star Wars project could be inaccessible to a huge portion of the global fanbase, with viewership potentially limited to a single geographic territory—at least for now.Credit: LucasfilmRelated: Lucasfilm Digitally Alters ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, Updated Version Sets Official Release DateStar Wars (1977) Could Be Restricted Outside the UKThat project is Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, the first-ever official Welsh-language version of Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (1977).The entire original cast has been replaced (in audio form, at least) and the new voice cast includes Matthew Rhys as Han Solo, Rhys Ifans as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Princess Leia, Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader, and Osian Morgan as Luke Skywalker. That means you won’t hear the likes of Mark Hamill, Alec Guinness, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and James Earl Jones.Credit: LucasfilmAnnounced by Lucasfilm, Disney, S4C, and Creative Wales in August, Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd will premiere on S4C and across its platforms on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026, ahead of the film’s 50th anniversary in 2027.Per the official press release in August, “The film, Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, will broadcast on S4C and across its platforms from Christmas Day onwards.”However, while the press release confirms that S4C content is available across its platforms, including S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer, it doesn’t specify which will carry this particular title. For international Star Wars fans, accessing the Welsh-language release could prove difficult, and those attempting to watch it from outside the UK could encounter regional restriction errors. With all that said, there may be hope, as the official announcement doesn’t explicitly rule out a simultaneous Disney+ release. Also, on the official S4C website, for those outside the UK, it advises: “We are thrilled that so many people around the world want to learn our beautiful language. You can watch lots of our programmes from outside the UK on S4C Clic; we love to showcase Wales to the world, and make our content available wherever we’re legally able to do so. Visit our website here for a regularly updated list of what is available.”However, on the website’s FAQ page, it says, “Copyright restrictions prevent us from showing all our content outside of the UK.”For now, neither source confirms whether this particular Star Wars release will be available internationally or on Disney+, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Will you watch Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd when it arrives on Christmas Day?
