My friend built a Chrome extension that makes you earn your social media time instead of blocking it. Thoughts?

Hey everyone! 👋 I'm helping a friend launch a side project called Onus, and I wanted to share what he's built and get some honest feedback. The problem we're trying to solve: You sit down to study or work, open social media for "just 5 minutes", and somehow an hour disappears. Traditional website blockers can help, but sometimes they feel too restrictive. You end up switching them off because you want a break. So what if there was a different approach? Instead of punishing distractions, what if productive work earned you screen time? That's the idea behind Onus. Here's how it works: 💻 Choose your productive websites, such as GitHub, Notion or Google Docs. ⏱ Every 25 minutes of active work earns 10 minutes of play. 🔒 Choose distracting websites like YouTube, Reddit or X to restrict. 🎯 Spend your earned time whenever you want a break. 🔄 Once your break finishes, those websites become restricted again. It works as a Chrome extension, also supports Edge, and has a separate Windows desktop app. The idea is simple: Work earns play. We're currently experimenting with different short-form video styles to explain the concept. I've attached one of our animated adverts to demonstrate how it works. You can check out the actual product here: https://onus.page/ I'm helping with marketing, while my friend handles the development. I'd genuinely appreciate some feedback from fellow builders: Does the reward-based approach sound more useful than traditional website blockers? What would make you hesitant to install this extension? Is the value of Onus immediately clear from the website? We're still learning how best to explain and market the product, so constructive criticism would be incredibly helpful. Thanks for checking it out! 🙌 submitted by /u/BossBeerus [link] [comments]
