Hi all. Some of you might remember the wall mount I posted a few weeks ago. This is its little brother. The Steam Controller kept ending up on the sofa, on the floor, or under the cushion. The Puck needs a cable anyway, and the console has a USB-C port on the back, so I wanted one spot where the controller lives and charges. The obvious spot was the top of the console. So the dock is exactly as wide as the Steam Machine (156 mm) and sits flush with the front. The little groove around the faceplate carries on along the dock at the same height, so from across the room it reads as one block rather than a thing stuck on top. The controller lies in a pocket shaped on Valve's official CAD, so from the side you only see the sticks. The Puck slides into a recess underneath, under two small rails, and the USB-C cable goes through a tunnel and out of the back into the console. Once the cable is plugged in, the Puck can't slide out. You drop the controller in and it charges. The straight cable that comes in the box is the right length. A few things I learned along the way: The Puck magnets are stronger than you'd think. My first test print was light, and when I lifted the controller the whole dock came up with it. This one is 446 g on purpose. Yes, that's a lot of plastic for a controller holder. It's the plastic that keeps it on the console. There's a finger recess in the front edge, so you put your fingers under the controller and lift it towards you like a lid. Pulling it straight up against the magnets was annoying. Four small rubber feet sit in recessed seats underneath, so it doesn't slide on the smooth top of the console. The top of the Steam Machine has no vents (air comes in from the bottom and leaves at the back), so the dock isn't covering anything that needs to breathe. It also works on top of a console that's hanging on the wall with my mount, which is how I use it now. It prints flat, no supports, about 22 hours and 446 g in PETG or PLA. It fits almost every Bambu printer, A1 mini included. I printed mine in Bambu PETG Matte black, which is the closest match I found to the console's finish. PLA works too, my first test was PLA, but if the console sits somewhere warm I'd go PETG. The pocket and the Puck recess come from the CAD files Valve released under CC BY-NC-SA, so the dock is under the same license. Thanks Valve for publishing those, it made this a lot easier. It's free on MakerWorld: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3513646-steam-controller-top-dock-for-steam-machine Happy to hear feedback, especially if the fit is off on your controller. submitted by /u/rickydp to r/steammachine [link] [comments]
