DFS could Help to Buy spark demand for sofas too?DFS Furniture PLCLSE_DLY:DFSStockso_SimpleLooking at the chart alone, I’m undecided. A little price exhaustion seems to be setting in, with a series of upper rejection wicks over the last couple of weeks. 150p is proving a tough line to break. If it does break, a run back to the 170p highs wouldn’t be out of the question. That said, if you’re a long term investor, this is just noise. The bigger picture matters more. On 26 September the Government announced a new scheme called Your First Home. First time buyers would put down a 2.5% deposit on a new build, backed by a 20% Government equity loan. The income cap and full details land at the Budget on 28 October. New builds feed growth right across the economy, and every new homeowner needs to furnish their home. Someone already renting might not need a new sofa, although a first time buyer moving into an empty new build is far more likely to. DFS sits at exactly the right end of the market for that. I went sofa shopping in the spring. DFS isn’t the cheapest, but it’s at the lower end. I reckon only Ikea beats it on value. Crucially, it offers 4 years interest free with no deposit. So you could have buyers getting into a new home on a tiny deposit, then buying a big ticket item with no deposit at all. Excellent market conditions if you ask me. For now it’s educated guesswork, and the Budget needs to confirm the detail. I think it warrants more research as a longer term hold. I just have a bad record with retailers. Feeling positive on this one. Let’s leave it there.
