My experience daily driving a PS5 with Linux as a desktop PC

Wait 5 sec.

Why did I do this? I did this because my PC is very dated. The specs are: Intel Core i5 6400 RTX 2060 (now a GTX 1650, because I gave it to my brother) 16GB of DDR4 2133MT/s 240GB SSD (which is now used for the PS5) I never had an issue with the graphics card's performance, and it ran all the games I wanted and did all the work I had to do on it, but it was showing it's age. I had to use custom kernels with the bore scheduler just to make it smoother. (such as the cachyos-bore kernel, which made the desktop never hang even at 100% CPU utilization, but it didn't magically increase performance) The PS5, even though it compares to a "budget PC" is more than enough for me. I play all my games at 4K on it, such as Counter Strike 2, and it never drops below 100FPS on medium settings. I could upgrade my CPU and motherboard to something better, but I choose not to because I don't think it's worth it, because I don't need a PC that much. It didn't make sense to upgrade just so I can play CS2 at a more stable frame rate the few occasions I go and play. What issues have I encountered? The only issues I have encountered are 2 small issues. Audio not working over HDMI. I just used a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter to fix it. Random kernel-level hangs in games and heavy tasks. I created a 16GB swap partition, and the issue has gone away. The system completely locked up in games such as CS2 and didn't respond to any input, but now it runs super well. These issues will not be for everyone, it depends on what distribution/.img file you pick from the ps5-linux-image Github repository. I don't recall having the audio issue on SteamOS. How is it using it as my main machine? I have been using it for almost a week. It has been a great experience. The performance is amazing. Even though each boot takes 45s - 120s to enter into Linux, it doesn't bother me. Most of the times, I am on my phone watching something, and the time passes instantly. My tips for anyone wanting to use Linux on the PS5 There are a few things no one has talked about that I suggest you do after you boot up into Linux on your PS5. Change the password. By default, it's set to "ps5" and this obviously can create a bunch of security issues. Be sure to change it after initially setting it up. Make sure you have a swap partition. I don't think every PS5 Linux image has a swap partition or swap file made by default, and as I mentioned earlier, not having one created a bunch of issues that make it seem as if PS5 Linux is unstable, but in reality, it's far from unstable. It can't possibly get by with just 16GB of unified GDDR5 ram for video and system memory. Be sure to never update the kernel or replace it. I have had one package that has tried to replace the linux-ps5 package (the kernel) with the standard Linux package, and that would of caused my system to not boot. Be very careful when downloading new software and add the linux-ps5 package to the list of packages your package manager should ignore on updates. What Linux distribution do I recommend? In my opinion, I would pick anything but Ubuntu. Once you actually boot up into Linux on the PS5, it basically becomes a standard PC. Don't pick Ubuntu just because all the guides use it. You can give AI the list of steps you have to do, and ask it to give you the same instructions but for your distribution. SteamOS is very cool on it. I've tried it. It's not for me, but if I had a big Steam library and wanted the Steam Machine experience, and just set it up in my living room and play on my TV, it is what I would of picked. What firmware is my PS5 on and which model is it? My PS5 is on 11.40. It is the regular PS5, the second revision they have made for the PS5.
