Muthusamy at the Erode Taluk Office on Wednesday (October 28, 2026) to discuss alternative housing and interim arrangements for the residents. The tenements were constructed about 30 years ago.Officials said the buildings stood on water body poramboke land and could not be reconstructed at the same site in view of court orders on the protection of water bodies.Eligible residents willing to move to accommodations built by the Board at Chithode would be allotted houses, with the government bearing the allotment charge of ₹68,000. Those unwilling to move to Chithode would be offered interim rental assistance of ₹24,000 until alternative arrangements were made, or assistance to secure temporary accommodation elsewhere. Officials said identifying a new site at Lakkapuram or another suitable location and constructing houses through the Board could take about two years.Following the meeting, residents agreed to vacate the tenements by November 15 and assured officials of their cooperation in a survey of occupants to be conducted. Further steps, including disconnection of electricity connections, documentation of occupants and sharing the details with the departments concerned, would be taken.
