Frustration is mounting among residents of Jema-Asemkrom over the risks associated with helping authorities fight illegal mining on the Tano River. Some residents allege they have suffered intimidation and death threats from traditional leaders and other community members whom they claim are involved in the illegal mining activities.A recent visit by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) taskforce has also exposed the persistence of illegal mining on the river, despite repeated enforcement operations and the Secretariat’s presence in the area. The taskforce fears that the lack of cooperation from residents could compromise its operations.
